James and his Canadian cousins celebrated a season of birthdays with some ice cream cake. Happy kids all around.
Hanging Out
Admirals Beat the Wolves 4-1
Yesterday, James and I attended our first Admirals game of the season, his first game as a 2-year old. He loved it. We had a lot of fun.
Based on the number of times James has mentioned these things, I’m guessing that these were the highlights:
- Roscoe (the mascot)
- Roscoe giving high 5s (we didn’t get one)
- the blimp and the papers it was dropping (we didn’t get one)
- the pirate ship
- the Zambonies
- the goalies
- when the big guys fell down
- when #2 broke his stick
- the business card that the ticketing manager gave us
- the water fountains
I knew that James was really into the game when I offered him some snacks and he said no. I think his exact words were, “I don’t want snacks, Daddy. I’m watching hockey.” Looking forward to the next game.
I have no explanation for this:
I’m James. I’m a boy.
Hard not to love seeing this little guy playing in the leaves on a warm, windy, fall day.
Brush Your Teeth
The Answer is No
James has made remarkable progress in so many ways, it’s amazing. We sometimes lose sight of just how far his language skills have come along. One example – the other night, instead of just saying “no”, he surprised us with “The answer is no.” It’s become a bit of a running joke now – even he seems to see the humor in it, and all of the variations that we throw at him. For example,
Me: “The answer is bedtime.”
Him: “The answer is popsicle.”
Another recent James-ism is “open pants”. To the rest of us, that means shorts, but not James. He knows the word shorts, but doesn’t use it. He likes his legs to be “open”, meaning, not covered by pants. Kind of, sort of makes sense … fun to see where a bright mind and sometimes limited vocabulary will take you. Reminds me a little of when I was learning Chinese and would try to make up new words to fill in a blank spot in my vocabulary … although usually I’d just cheat and say the English word.
And because all posts are better with a photo …
For the record, James just completed his first successful crib escape. No apparent injuries and he’s not yet willing to discuss how he did it. We’re hoping that this is a onetime thing. We’re not ready for him to be in a regular bed (again)!
